Because every woman is different, a standard breast shield will not always fit comfortably. We have a range of sizes to fit different nipple sizes.

Sizes:

Small 21mm
Medium 24 mm (the size normally provided with your breast pump)
Large 27 mm
X Large 30 mm
XX large 36 mm

Why is it important that the breast shield fits?

A correctly fitting breast shield will prevent milk ducts from being compressed during pumping. This will ensure the maximum milk output and also ensure that the breast empties properly. This is important because it helps the mother to maintain her milk production. Friction around the nipple or areola can cause discomfort, which may discourage women from breastfeeding. Also, trauma to the nipple area can cause tissue damage which carries with it a risk of infection and mastitis.

How do I choose the right size?

1. Centre the nipple in the breast shield tunnel.
2. Turn on the pump and check the following points:

Is the nipple moving freely in the tunnel?
Is minimal or no areola tissue being pulled into the tunnel of the breast shield?
Do you see a gentle, rhythmical motion in the breast with each cycle of the pump?
Do you feel the breast emptying all over?
Is the nipple pain free?

If the answer to any of the above questions is 'No', you should try a larger, or small breast shield.
