The Safe Sippy cup, from US company Kid Basix, was designed in response to calls from the American public for a child's drinking cup that was free from the toxic chemicals associated with some plastics.

For many years there has been growing concern among scientists about what happens when plastic cups are heated - in the dishwasher, microwave or even a hot car. The heat causes chemicals to leach out of the plastic and these are known to have the most damaging effects on young children, whose bodies are still developing. Studies have suggested that chemicals such as BPA, DEHA, phthalates and styrene have been linked with numerous health issues, including reproductive problems, ADHD, immune function, childhood obesity and kidney and liver damage.

Toxin Free

The Safe Sippy cup is made from stainless steel, and is tested free of harmful leaching chemicals. Stainless Steel is thought to be one of the safest alternatives to plastic, and experts predict that it will be used increasingly for children's feeding products over the coming years, as parents seek out healthy lifestyle choices for their children.

Stainless Steel

The Safe Sippy is made from medical grade stainless steel. Because stainless steel is inert, it does not interact with the foods and fluids it comes into contact with. So what you put into the cup is what you get out - no unwanted extras!  Stainless steel is also a very durable material, extending the useable life of your drinker.

Cap

The cap on the Safe Sippy is the only plastic part that comes into contact with the drink inside. This is made of polypropylene, the most stable of plastics. It is free of Bisphenol A, phthalates and DEHA.

Design

Recent research has shown that wide flat drink spouts can cause developmental and speech problems in young mouths. The Safe Sippy Cup spout is shaped like a straw, a design that is approved by experts. The removable handles have little ridges which help a small child to grip them. The stainless steel inner section is covered in a colourful rubbery material called TPR, or thermo plasticized rubber. This provides insulation, and also protects the cup if it is dropped. The rubber also means that the cup is easier to hold once your child is old enough to use it without the handles.
