Cot Mattresses

It is recommended by health visitors and midwives that each new baby must have a new mattress.

When choosing a mattress you need to first consider how long it is to be used, if you have chosen a cot, baby will probably use it for around 2 years if you have chosen a cotbed it will need be used for around five to six years.

The next consideration is how hot baby is likely to be. If you are both hot people when you are asleep, your baby is likely to be the same so you will need to choose between a mattress filled with polyester as this is a good at moving heat away from the body and a sprung mattress as this has plenty of space for the heat to dissipate. Moses basket and crib mattresses are usually made of foam as the time that they are used is short, foam is adequate for supporting the weight of a young baby.

Fibre Mattresses

Polyester is a good mattress filler as it remains cool moving heat away from the body much quicker than foam, also helping protect against dust mites, which can irritate asthma and eczema.

Foam Mattresses

There a number of grades of foam used in the manufacture of baby mattresses the denser the greater the support for your child. If the mattress is for occasional use rather than everyday the cheaper mattress options will be sufficient.

Sprung Cot Mattresses

Sprung mattresses are the top of the range these will not dip even with the hottest toddler. They are long lasting and offer good support to the growing body.
