Baby Carriers

Your newborn baby enjoys being close to you, it may sound strange but a baby carrier may be the answer to getting household chores done. Back carriers can be used, once your child has head support, and are great to get out and about without having to use your pram or buggy.

Baby Slings

Baby slings allow you to carry your newborn in a reclined position in the 'traditional' way, these carriers will also give you the flexibility to carry an older baby supported on your hip - therefore the useable age range will be greater than a front carrier.

Front Baby Carriers

The first stage baby carriers are used on your front, with baby facing into your body, as your child gains head control they can be turned and face outwards with their spine against your tummy. This type of carrier ranges from around 7lbs in weight and will probably be useable until baby is around 10 to 12 months.

When choosing a carrier look for those that are designed to distribute the weight of baby away from your shoulders. If you are breast-feeding look for those that have the ability to give baby access without too much fuss.

Back Carriers

Back carriers can be used from the time baby can comfortably support their own head for longer periods - usually around 8 months and are useable until around 3 years (if you are strong enough to carry them at that age).

The carrier needs to be able to be adjusted to fit you comfortably, as the weight you will be carrying will constantly increase. Baby will be more comfortable if the seat is adjustable, and soft padding in front of the face will absorb dribble and give a comfortable resting place.

Carriers with a strap across the adult's sternum will give reassurance to ladies while carrying as the weight tends to pull the shoulder straps apart, this strap will stop them coming off the shoulder. Rain covers and sun protection are available for most backpacks.

Hip Carriers

These are carriers that fit on the hip and are used for older children, just before they can walk, or for those that just want to be carried. When placing baby on your hip without a seat, you will force your hip sideways to form a seat, this puts a large amount of pressure on the spine. By using a hip seat the weight is taken by the whole of the lower back, protecting the spine and keeping in good alignment. They really do make a difference.
